Begun during the pandemic, this renovation of an shingled 1890 Oakland home restored the two apartment into a functional space for entertaining and raising a family.
While restoring historic plaster work and decommissioning the large central chimney, we suggested alternatives for the “dead” space inside the fireplace. As imagined in one rendering, this fireplace could become a rock climbing gym. The clients ultimately furnished the space as a reading nock for their young kids. Perhaps you will be the clients who want a rock climbing wall installed in your repurposed chimney?
This kitchen is an example of what careful fabrication, installation and finishing can do with flat-pack paint-grade cabinetry. While the tolerances are not as uniform or fine as in fully custom cabinetry, the function and custom color freedom afforded at this price point made it the right choice for this renovation.
